Job Summary: Grace Immanuel UCC is a progressive and inclusive community of Christian faith, welcoming and affirming all individuals and families. The Music Director is responsible for directing, planning, and leading the music programs of Grace Immanuel UCC. As a member of the staff, the Music Director will also interact regularly and cooperatively with other staff and volunteer members, the Worship Committee, and the congregation.
Responsibilities:
⮚ Overall accountability for the total music ministry of the church, including adult choir, instrumental ensemble, youth ensemble, and other ensembles as needed.
⮚ Plans, directs, and implements the music program for all worship experiences in coordination with the Pastor, Worship Committee, and AV/Sound team.
⮚ Works with Pastor to develop worship service style and themes.
⮚ Possess a thorough working knowledge of the congregation’s worship services.
⮚ Prepares special music consistent with the liturgical calendar and in cooperation with the pastor and program staff.
⮚ Responsible for purchasing all music and supplies within the church budget.
⮚ Responsible for purchasing and maintaining equipment with the approval of the church council.
⮚ Oversight of music for all services as well as special events and seasonal needs including but not limited to: Special preaching series, Advent Christmas, Lent, Easter, etc.
⮚ Maintains musical archives (both paper music and digital worship slides for use in worship service).
⮚ Create and maintain a schedule for weekly worship song leaders.
⮚ Hires appropriate guest musicians as required for special presentations in consultation with the accompanist and in consideration of the annual budget for the choir.
⮚ Regularly explore new trends and products in worship music.
⮚ In addition to rehearsals and worship services, prepares worship music up to four weeks in advance. Advance preparation includes the selection and preparation of congregational music, reviewing new music, choosing special music for worship, facilitation of special musicians (instrumental and vocal soloists/ensembles), and worship planning for Sundays and special occasions.
⮚ Maintain appropriate copyright licensing for worship use (in person and online).
⮚ Submit A/V requests by no later than Thursday of each week.
⮚ Conduct weekly rehearsals for the adult choir and/or other choirs as needed.
⮚ Leads choir during Sunday worship services
⮚ Obtains substitutes as necessary, as a maximum of three (3) rehearsals and three (3) services annually.
⮚ Special services requested, such as weddings and funerals, will be compensated separately per church policy.
⮚ Comply with Grace Immanuel UCC’s Safe Church policies, including a background check.
Qualifications:
⮚ Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in music, worship, or a related field, or display a professional level of musical talent from training and experience; extensive experience in choral and church music preferred.
⮚ Communicates well and in a friendly manner with church staff, volunteers, and members.
⮚ Enjoys working with people of all age groups.
⮚ Has strong verbal and written communication skills.
⮚ Possesses effective planning and organizational skills.
⮚ Has the flexibility to consider, access, and implement new and innovative methods and programs to enhance the music ministry and worship of the church.
⮚ Has at minimum basic accompanying skills on piano
Supervision and Compensation: The church Council will recommend compensation for the Music Director as part of the annual coordinated budget process. The position will be paid every two weeks electronically. This person will report to the Pastor and Church Council.
